After 20 years of debate, 195 countries came together in Paris in December of 2015 in unanimous support of the Paris Agreement, a pact that aims to reduce global carbon emissions and thus avoid the most dangerous consequences of climate change. Climate change is an issue that transcends not only the boundaries of nations but also those of generations and economic theory. For much of its history, environmental economics has employed standard economic tools to better understand our relationship with natural systems. This has been true for climate change as well. Climate economics, though, has gotten bogged down in debates over valuation, pricing and optimal policy while the threat of climate change mounts [Ackerman 2007 provides an overview of many of these debates]. Planetary Economics attempts to cut through these debates by integrating more recent economic approaches into a novel framework.
