Situated in the upper part of Barcelona, the Ocular Microsurgery Institute (IMO) is part of a series of new facilities built along the Ronda de Dalt, a ring road built for the 1992 Olympics, and which has proved to be one of the most important urban transformations for daily life in Barcelona today.rnThe Ronda de Dalt also marks a dividing line (often more imaginary than real) between the city and the mountainside. The IMO lies between the urban grid of the well-to-do Sant Gervasi neighbourhood and the start of Collserola Park, the Dity's largest natural space. Its position as a border separating the city and its natural spaces is probably one of the keys to understanding a building that has voluntarily denied any sense of monumental-ity by submerging more than 60 per cent of its constructed surface below ground.
