Among the countless paintings of Venice, I find Venetia by Friedrich Bernhard Werner (1750) the most impressive. At the height of the Enlightenment, his is an interesting "Nordic" interpretation. The city is more compactly portrayed than in earlier depictions, and the belfries standing out against the sky accentuate Venice's verticality. This particular conformation of the skyline is still the one that impresses itself upon the eyes when approaching the city or crossing through the inlands of Veneto. In the lagoon, the horizon extending between sky and water is dotted with slender towers that deliver themselves to the heavens in the shape of light, elegant architecture.%Tra le innumerevoli vedute di Venezia, mi ha colpito in modo particolare Venetia di Friedrich Bernhard Werner (1750). In pieno illuminismo, egli propone un'interessante lettura 'nordica': l'immagine della città appare assai più compatta che nelle raffigurazioni precedenti e, con lo svettare dei campanili, ne viene particolarmente accentuata la verticalità. Questa particolare configurazione dello skyline si imprime ancora oggi nello sguardo di chi si avvicina alla città o percorre l'entroterra Veneto. Nella laguna, la linea dell'orizzonte, stesa fra aria e acqua, è punteggiata dalle figure snelle dei campanili che sì conse-gnanoalcielo in leggere ed eleganti architetture.
