Does contemporary Italian architecture, that of new construction especially, have an identity of its own? It is not easy to describe if you think that even the "working" generation of "masters", excluding perhaps Renzo Piano and Massimiliano Fuksas, has low visibility on the international scene in terms of being Italian. Between that generation and the last described by Domus in this issue extensively given over to the youngest architects, there is a fully active second one which has, for various reasons, perhaps, been overlooked by the media. Probably because it has become introverted in an attempt to cast off the burden of a crushing modern tradition, it has distinguished itself with a building production that is fair but lacking in surges of enthusiasm, as if afraid to break the rules of a clientele and media market not overly interested in genuine innovation. This would not appear to be the fate of the irregular army of young architects whose first/latest most demanding and successful designs are published here.
