CASA ELVAS, BRESSANONE

Two curved lines are - unconsciously -interwoven in the design of this one-family villa in Bressanone, near Bolzano. The first is the memory of a pre-exist-ent house: a rationalist architecture built in the 1930s and afterwards completely altered. Frequented in the early 20th century by wealthy Russians and Germans, this hill above the city is sprinkled with quaint villas, their pseudo-Romanesque or mock gothic loggias enjoying spectacular views of the valley. When he decided to make it his new home, the owner chose a path frequently trodden in Trentino-Alto Adige:rnhe organised an informal competition and, on the advice of friends, invited six architects to participate. He gave them the possibility of either converting the building or demolishing it completely.
