His objects are never forced in terms of form and have a great technical value. Structural cleanness is taken to the extreme, so much so that the distinction between formal and functional elements disappears. "The aesthetic and technical aspects are bound up with the material," explains the architect. "What I try to do is exploit to the full the potential of materials using them in the most natural and simple way possible". This attention to the language of materials probably stems from his early professional experiences in the super-technical world of the automotive industry. He recounts: "Looking to other sectors has enabled me to take innovative technical solutions into the domestic sphere". In the designs conceived for Rimadesio, a company he is now the artistic director for, this kind of sensitivity is evident. He designed the first door in glass and aluminium for the Brianza-based company 28 years ago, a time when this was unheard of in the world of furniture. "Furniture was made from wood", recalls the designer, "we started to use industrial materials and we brought them into the world of design". Since then, glass and aluminium have become the protagonists in Rimadesio's solutions for the home, such as the Velaria system of sliding doors where the structural profile in aluminium with its minimal thickness functions to enhance the exclusive aesthetic qualities of glass. Aluminium is a resistant material, easy to work with and can be salvaged at the end of a product's life. Lightweight and rustproof, it is affected very little by atmospheric agents. Due to these characteristics, Bavuso took it into the field of window frames straight away, continuing to express his vision. Alongside design for Rimadesio, he is pursuing a similar course in the world of windows. He is now artistic director for Erco, and has worked with them to integrate the architectural element that is the window into the interior design, treating it as an object of design.
