Development of marinas - what is the future?

The term marina was invented in the USA in 1928 but the first design recommendations were formulated by the NAEBM (National Association of England Boat Manufacturers) in 1939. Traditionally yachts were moored (not berthed) at local facilities run by repair or building yards and did not expect, nor seek, any particular service apart from repairs and maintenance. Marinas (yacht harbours) developed relatively late in the UK with the major growth in the 1970s/80s. Commercially the berthing (?parking) of vessels is not a recipe for an early retirement to the Cayman Islands or Monte Carlo and there is a need for service to the owners pandering to the support crews and involvement of the community.
