Your business card identifies you as a manager, but are you a leader? It's easy for managers to fall into the trap of focusing too much on title, posi tion, and where they stand in the organi zational chart, says author and leadership consultant John Maxwell. They expect people to do what they say because they're the boss — and when this approach doesn't work, they get confused. Maxwell's latest book, The 5 Levels of Leadership, lays out a number of strategies for raising your management game. His advice: 1. A title doesn't make you a leader. Just because you're the boss doesn't mean people will follow you. In fact, leading based solely on position is what Maxwell calls "the lowest level of leadership." Train yourself to avoid mentioning your position, and refrain from pulling rank.
