Want to stay busy? Try taking a head count of all the life on Earth. That's what researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and the California Institute of Technology did, picking through hundreds of studies to conduct a global census. They dug up some interesting stuff: Of the approximately 550 gigatons of carbon (Gt C) life that inhabits our planet, plants take up the biggest chunk, accounting for 450 Gt C. The team also found that the combined biomass of humans and livestock far outweighs the biomass of wild mammals, pointing to the impact our species has had on the biosphere.
