The GWR 'Centenary' stock

The year 1935 was one of great significance. It marked the Silver Jubilee of King George V, the centenary of the Great Western Railway, and the beginning of Great Britain's emergence from the great depression. The Great Western Railway Bill received the Royal Assent from King William IV on 31 August 1835, and after the Railways Act of 1921 it was the only company to continue operating under its original Act. Never shy of generating its own publicity, the GWR embarked on a year of celebrations, which culminated in a centenary dinner in Bristol on 31 August where the Prince of Wales was the guest of honour. The company also decided the time was right to revamp the 'Cornish Riviera Express' with new stock and a new title, the 'Cornish Riviera Limited', that reflected the change to the pre-paid booking of the seats.
