Fed by countless local trip and medium distance goods duties that were often slow in nature, a series of core workings of fully-piped stock operated from key yards along the length of the East Coast main line. Continuously-braked, these trains were allowed to travel at higher speeds, thus offering unrivalled delivery times in the years before motorways. Much of the traffic travelled overnight for arrival at the start of the customers' working day, be it van and container traffic, livestock, cement, or perishables such as a catch offish from east coast ports arriving as fresh as possible at its destination.
