As a football mad Londoner growing up in the 1950s and 1960s with dreams of becoming the next Johnny Haynes, it took a while for the penny to drop as to why the Gresley 'B17/6' class 'Footballers' did not include Fulham or even Chelsea. With summer holidays in the 1950s involving travelling between Liverpool Street and Clacton-on-Sea or Dovercourt, where we stayed with relations, the 'Footballers' with their cast brass half-section footballs under the nameplates, and splashers painted in club colours, were quickly ticked off in my Ian Allan Eastern Region ABC. Of the 25 'Footballers', No 61668 Bradford City became the last 'B17' of any kind to be withdrawn and cut up.
