It is natural during the unfolding coronavirus disease2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to focus on emergencyresponse planning, including containment, treatmentprocedures, and vaccine development, and nobodywould doubt the need for these measures. However, anemergency can also open a window of opportunity forreflection and learning. We live in increasingly global, interdependent, and environmentally constrainedsocieties and the COVID-19 pandemic exemplifies theseaspects of our world. We would therefore be wise totake a broad integrated perspective on this disease, theimpacts of which are already spilling over into the realmsof economics, international trade, politics, and inequality.Resilience planning needs to cope with these cascadingimpacts, and prevention efforts require a similarly widelens to encompass ecosystems, wild animal diseasesurveil lance, agricultural practices, eating habits, andcultural traditions and contexts. In other words, we needa planetary health perspective that cuts across traditionaldomains of knowledge, governance, and economicsectors to properly address the challenge posed byCOVID-19.
