Abstract A survey involving 3411 geographical sites was carried out to obtain information on the concentration of Mn typically found in grass-clover pastures in New Zealand. There was little evidence that excess Mn was a major limiting factor for pasture growth. Only 6 sites had Mn concentrations in the herbage above the level which adversely affects the growth of white clover, and no site had concentrations in excess of that which depresses the growth of ryegrass. The mean concentrations for the North and South Islands were 159 and 181 mg Mn/kg DM respectively. In addition it was estimated that the growth of lucerne would have been adversely affected by excess Mn in only 2070 of the sites sampled. The results of the survey are briefly discussed in relation to animal health.
