Gotenyama in what is now Tokyo’s Kita Shinagawa areawas a scenic area that commanded a fine view of theTokyo Bay. The picture overlooks the Shinagawa-shukuarea, which was a station on the Tokaido. Looking furthereast from this spot than shown in this picture, visitorscould see the mountains on the Boso Peninsula far acrossShinagawa Bay. As the title suggests, Gotenyama wasalso a popular place to view the cherry blossoms in springand was poetically described as giving the illusion ofclouds or snow when the trees were in full bloom.
