Official: Army should prioritize modernization over legacy systems

The Army should focus its procurement spending on acquiring new systems, rather than dedicating resources to legacy systems, the commanding general of the service's Maneuver Center of Excellence said Feb. 4. In particular, the service will need to prioritize buying the Mobile Protected Firepower, its upcoming light tank, over more upgrades to the decades-old Abrams and Bradley platforms, Maj. Gen. Patrick Donahoe said at Defence iQ's virtual International Armoured Vehicles conference. "We've got to transform our Army very, very quickly," Donahoe said. The Mobile Protected Firepower will be the Army's first wholly new tank since the first version of the Ml Abrams main battle tank was introduced more than four decades ago.
