Digital technologies, such as artificialintelligence, offer innovative solutionsto some of the challenges of the sustainabledevelopment goals, particularly inresource-constrained settings.1,2 Digitalsolutions and artificial intelligence havethe potential to transform health careand improve access to services by addressingfinancial, social or geographicfactors. The digital future appears positive;however, we must also consider newethical and human rights risks arisingfrom the application of these technologicaldevelopments in public health.3,4The benefits of big data should notcome at the expense of data privacyrights or be used for purposes other thanthose originally intended.5 We recognizethe range of ethical issues related to thecollection, sharing, repurposing andmisuse of big data, and acknowledgethat biased and unrepresentative datacan contribute to increasing the gapbetween those who benefit and thosewho are left behind.6 Making sure theseconcerns are addressed through betterregulation and mechanisms of accountabilityis critical. Collaboration betweenprivate and public-sector actors is essentialto achieve this goal, and FondationBotnar aims to facilitate and mobilizethese partnerships.
