Quality of Sleep among Medical Students: Relationship with Personality Traits

Sleep quality affects the academic performance and interpersonal relationship of students and predisposes them to mental illnesses. Personality traits are one of the known factors contributing to the sleep architecture of an individual.Aim: The present study investigated the relationship between sleep quality and personality traits among medical students.Materials and Methods: The index study was a cross-sectional, self-administered, and questionnaire-based study. The medical students were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Short Scale for sleep quality and personality traits, respectively.Results: Among 166 medical students, 54 (32.53%) reported poor sleep quality. Students with poor sleep quality had higher scores on neuroticism (6.24±3.08) than those with good sleep quality (4.23±2.52, p<0.001). Neuroticism was positively correlated with the global score on the PSQI (r=0.39, p<0.001), whereas extraversion was negatively correlated with the global score (r=-0.16, p<0.05).Conclusion: Neuroticism and extraversion are associated with poor sleep quality among medical students. The effect of sleep disorders on academic performance may be improved by exploring these personality traits in future studies.
