Improving the quality of laboratory systems through Strengthening Laboratory Management Towards Accreditation (SLMTA) in Rwanda, 2010-2013

Background: Efficient and reliable laboratory services and networking are essential components of effective, well functioning health systems in disease surveillance. Therefore, improving the performance of clinical and public health laboratories is one of the main goals of strengthening health system. In July 2009, in Kigali, Rwanda saw the concurrent launch of World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO) stepwise framework for preparing laboratories to achieve ISO 15189 Standards and accreditation, and the Strengthening Laboratory Management Toward Accreditation (SLMTA) program.
