Brown rot fungi were recently shown to differentially express oxidative and hydrolytic genes in sequence. This “two-step” mechanism may serve to isolate harsh oxidative pretreatments near the hyphal front, but this has not been confirmed via secretomics nor among distantly related species. Here, Presley and Schilling (e02987-16) showed that the two-step mechanism holds true in protein profiles and between two taxonomically divergent brown rot fungi (Gloeophyllum trabeum and Serpula lacrymans). Their secretome profiles and growth/protein allocations, however, were strikingly different and in line with their unique life history strategies, suggesting that a general two-step mechanism defines brown rot more than their comparative genomes.
