IN April of 1956, upon the invitation of Polly Bunting, thenDean of Douglass College, I spoke at Founder's Day exercisesin the chapel here at Douglass. My subject was of courselibraries, and Dean Bunting's invitation to me was part of a campaignto raise the consciousness of everyone concerned about the need fora proper library building on the Douglass Campus. I said, "Ourfunction is not only to have the books but to facilitate their use. Wemust provide not only easy accessibility but also a convenient andpleasant place to read and study. I look forward with confidence tothe day when you will have on this campus a modern undergraduatelibrary building . ..".
