Library History Materials at Rutgers, including Archives Relating to the New Jersey College for Women Library School and the Founding of the Rutgers Graduate School for Library and Information Studies

THE Archival Study Project/ Records Survey began operationin February 1980 under the auspices of Rutgers University Librariesas an effort to survey and make recommendations aboutUniversity records. While examining old records, staff members discoveredtwo collections, and acquired a third item, of interest to librariansand historians. The first collection consists of the historical records of theNew Jersey College for Women1 (NJCW) Library School, the secondof materials accumulated by John B. Kaiser on libraries and library administration,and the third is a 91 page unpublished history of the NJCWLibrary School written by its Director for 20 years, Ethel M. Fair.2 Thisarticle briefly describes the two collections, gives a biography of Ethel M.Fair, and then presents a shortened, edited, version of her manuscript.
