Although several efforts were made to supportthe standardization of Web Services (such as WSDL, UDDI,SOAP, BPEL, etc.), they are not always perfectly compatibleto each other due to the distributed nature. Both data andprocess heterogeneity required and offered by services’requesters and providers hamper the usability of Webservices, thus service mediation becomes one key workingarea in SOA. While the former has received considerableattention, process mediation is still open and currentapproaches provide only partial solutions. In this paper, amediator-based approach for process mediation of webservices is proposed to adjust the partially compatiblemessages interchange behaviors to suit therequested/expected interface of each party. Based on theidentification of message exchanging sequences in serviceinteractions, several basic process mismatch patterns arepresented to develop basic mediator patterns, which can beused to modularly construct advanced mediators that canresolve all possible process mismatches.
