Previousworkshaveshownthatmomentumtransferinthewall–normaldirectionwithinturbulentwall–boundedflowsoccursprimarilywithincoherentstructuresdefinedbyregionsofintenseReynoldsstress[1].Suchstructuresmaybeclassifiedintowall–attachedandwall–detachedstructureswiththelatterbeingtypicallyweak,small–scale,andisotropicallyoriented,whiletheformerarelargerandcarrymostoftheReynoldsstresses.Themeanvelocityfluctuationwithineachstructuremayalsobeusedtoseparatestructuresbytheirdynamicproperties.Thisstudyaimstoextractinformationregardingthescales,kinematicsanddynamicsofthesestructureswithinthetopologicalframeworkoftheinvariantsofthevelocitygradienttensor(VGT).ThelocaltopologicalcharacteristicsoftheseintenseReynoldsstressstructuresarecomparedtothetopologicalcharacteristicsofvortexclustersdefinedbythediscriminantofthevelocitygradienttensor.Thealignmentofvorticitywiththeprincipalstraindirectionswithinthesestructuresisalsodetermined,andtheimplicationsofthesefindingsarediscussed...
