Ternary metallic-dielectric photonic crystals within ultraviolet wavelengths

In this paper, based on the transfer matrix method, we theoretically study the transmission properties in the ultraviolet (UV) region for a one-dimensional ternary metal-dielectric photonic crystal (MDPC). With the calculated transmission characteristics in the wavelength domain, it can be found that the photonic band gap (PBG) can be significantly enlarged compared to the usual binary dielectric-dielectric photonic crystal (DDPC). The roles played by the related parameters, such as the metal thickness, the angle and the polarization of the incident wave, will be discussed and illustrated. Additionally, different metals or dielectrics in the constituents are taken to examine their possible effects on the PBG.
