Drugs Prescription for Type 2 Diabetes mellitus Management during Hospitalization in a Portuguese Hospital

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are likely to develop both macro and microvascular complications; therefore, they are subject to taking a variety of medications. The aim of this study was to describe the prescription drugs and their incidence during hospitalization. The study involved 942 type 2 diabetes patients coded as the principal diagnosis from two central hospitals of the Portuguese National Health System (NHS) admitted between January 1 and December 31, 2011. Coded discharge summaries from each hospital, including medication through the identification of therapeutic pharmacologic drugs (TPD), were consulted. At the Hospital Center of Saint John of Porto, the following percentages of drugs were prescribed: 13.35% were central nervous system agents; 11.49% were for the cardiovascular system; 8.81% were anti-infective agents; and 7.13% were for drugs used in endocrine disorders. At the Hospital Center of North Lisbon, 16.3% of total prescriptions were related to the central nervous system, seconded by the cardiovascular system at 12.8%. Drugs used in endocrine disorders represented only 1%. This study supports the idea that diabetic patients need therapeutic and prophylactic drugs in different organs due to the conditions of the disease.
