Received December 18, 1989. Accepted July 27, 1990An endogenous α-amylase inhibitor protein was identified in germinating grains of rye. This protein binds only with the α-AMY-1 group of α-amylase isozymes to modify their PAGE properties. IEF was employed to dissociate the enzyme and inhibitor proteins.Four alleles at the inhibitor locus found to be located on the long am of chromosome 2R and designated Isa-1, were identified. The polymorphisms observed due to α-amylase-inhibitor interactions are explained in terms of allelic variation at aL-Amy-1 and Isa-1.
