The most widely used manual method for measuring erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is the Dispette ? System. The International Committee of Laboratory Standards establishes the dilution of the sample with sodium citrate 3.8% and offers the physiological saline solution 0.85% as an alternative. OBJECTIVE: To compare the system using two diluent solutions: sodium citrate 3.8% versus physiological saline (SSF) 0.85%. METHODOLOGY: We applied to 84 samples diluted with SSF and sodium citrate the procedure described by the commercial firm and the scheme of standardization and quality assurance used in the chair of Hematology, School of Bioanalysis. RESULTS: The mean for ESR with SSF and with sodium citrate were practically the same and the standard deviations were very similar. The bias or error is -0.04 mm / h. CONCLUSION: The values of ESR using sodium citrate 3.8% and SSF 0.85% are comparable.
