Oral Manifestations In Patients With Terminal Chronic Renal Disease Under Hemodialysis. Its Management In Oral Surgery

Kidney disease is the inability of the kidneys to excrete waste products from the body, which results in systemic manifestations that are evident in the oral cavity. The objective of this research was to determine the most common oral manifestations and its management in oral surgery. We performed a field study in 82 patients at the Hospital Clinico Universitario, Dialysis Unit at Razetti Clinic and the Dialysis Unit Juan Pablo II in the city of Caracas in may 2011. The study found that 98.7% had anemia, 81.7% hypertension, 52.4% secondary hyperparathyroidism, 41%, digestive disorders, 30.4% diabetes mellitus among other systemic diseases. 75.6% presented pale mucosa, 53.6% xerostomia, 51% dysgeusia, 15.8% gingival bleeding, 10.9% dental erosion and 6.1% renal osteodystrophy. Clinical history, oral examination and clinic photography was performed, with the patient signed informed consent. We performed a protocol for oral surgery taking care of the risks and systemic characteristics, antibiotic prophylaxis, conservative surgical technique and the use of hemostatic agents. It was concluded that these patients have oral manifestations not pathognomonic of the disease but valuable in assessing the overall condition of the patient, where a defined and standardized protocol is necessary to provide quality care to them.
