Traumatic complications of inpatient massage therapy: Case report and literature review

Recently, massage therapy has gained popularity as an alternative approach to patient care and is a commonly accepted adjunct topatient health care [1]. Between 1990 and 1997, the 1-year prevalence of the use of massage by the United States (US) generalpopulation increased from six to 12% [1]. Massage therapy now belongs to the three most popular complementary therapies fortraditional medicine in both the US [2] and the United Kingdom (UK) [3]. In some studies, the majority of physicians queried felt thatmassage provided a useful adjunct to their own practice and refer patients to massage therapists [4–6]. However, as shown in ourexperience, massage therapy can have adverse effects.
