Impressive progress in human development has beenaccompanied by profound shifts in a range of theEarth’s natural systems, including climate change,ocean acidifcation, biodiversity loss, land use change,pollution, and freshwater depletion.1,2 These pervasiveand interconnected changes are primarily driven by agrowing—although inequitably distributed—demandfor energy, food, and other resources, and will acceleratein future in the absence of decisive action.
