FibreMulti-ObjectSpectrograph(FMOS)isthefirstnear-infraredinstrumentwithawidefieldofviewcapableofacquiringspectrasimultaneouslyfromupto400objects.Ithasbeendevelopedasacommon-useinstrumentfortheF$$/$$2prime-focusoftheSubaruTelescope.Thefieldcoverageof30$$^prime$$diameterisachievedusinganew3-elementcorrectoroptimizedinthenear-infrared(0.9a€“1.8$$mu$$m)wavelengthrange.Duetolimitedspaceattheprime-focus,wehavehadtodevelopanovelfibrepositioner,calleda€?Echidnaa€?,togetherwithtwoOH-airglowsuppressedspectrographs.FMOSconsistsofthreesubsystems:theprimefocusunitforIR,thefibrepositioningsystem/connectorunits,andthetwospectrographs.Afterfullsystemsintegration,FMOSwasinstalledonthetelescopeinlate2007.Manyaspectsoftheperformancewerecheckedthroughvarioustestandengineeringobservations.Inthispaper,wepresenttheopticalandmechanicalcomponentsofFMOS,andshowtheresultsofouron-skyengineeringobservationstodate.
