Editorial: Sailing across the sea of guidelines

According to our current knowledge,diabetes mellitus is an incurable disease. Afteryears of evolution, the patients develop chroniccomplications, the cardiovascular ones beingextremely frequent and severe. It is estimatedthat the incidence of coronary artery disease,cerebrovascular disease and peripheral arterydisease is at least two times higher in diabeticpatients as compared to non-diabetic subjects[1]. Furthermore, these cardiovascular diseasescause almost half of the deaths of patients withdiabetes mellitus [2].
