Anexperimentwascarriedouttoexaminetheeffectsoftwolevelsofalkali(5%ureaand3%ureaplus0.5%calciumhydroxide),threeratiosofwater/straw(0.5:1,0.75:1and1:1),andthreetreatmentdurations(10,20and30days)onchemicalcompositionofricestrawafteraerationandpre-dryingat65oC.Itwasfoundthatthelevelsofthedifferentfactorsdidnotaffecttheneutraldetergentfibre(NDF)andaciddetergentfibre(ADF)content,althoughthesetwomeasurementswereslightlylowerintreatedstrawthaninuntreatedstraw.Themoreureaandthelongerthetreatmentduration,thehigherwasthecontentofchemicallyfixednitrogen(P0.05).However,thenitrogencontentwasnotsignificantlyaffectedbythechangeofwater:strawratiofrom0.5:1to1:1.Verificationofthesefindingsinpracticalfeedingtrialsisneededasthereareeconomicadvantagesfromreplacingsomeoftheureawithcalciumhydroxide.
