Study of the diversity of local cattle raising systems in the El-Tarf area, Algeria

Ainvestigationwasconductedat54localcattlefarmersdistributedonthreedifferentreliefareas,mountains,plainsandsurroundingsofthelakesintheregionofElTarf,enabledbyusingahierarchicalclusteranalysistoidentifysixlivestockfarmingsystems:(G1)lessdiversifiedsupportedfarmsanddominatedbylocalgenetictypes(G2)largepastoralfarmswithreversedtranshumance,(G3)smallsubsistencefarms,(G4)smallpastoralfarms(G5)diversifiedsupportedandhighlycrossedfarms,and(G6)diversifiedsupportedfarmsanddominatedbylocalgenetictypes.nbsp;Despiteitsperfectharmonywiththeenvironmentalconditions,thislivestockisfacingdifficultsituationswithfluctuatingfeedresourcesandthenon-conservationofspringsurplus.Mostfarmersarelandless.Thecattleliveconstantlyoncommongrazing,hence,thecontinueddegradationofthevegetationunderthehighstockingpressure.Generally,theproductionparametersrecordedarelowcomparedtothecapabilitiesofthesecattlepopulationsthatarenotmadeingoodfarmingconditionsthatwillenablethemtoexternalizetheircapabilities.Nevertheless,theyconstituteaveryimportantsocio-economicelementforthepopulationofthisregion.
