Recognizingthepotentialofthesugarpalmtree,(BorassusflabelliferL.,Arecaceae),toproducejuice(sap)richinhighlydigestiblecarbohydrates(sugars),andthesuccessinmanytropicalcountriesofpigfeedingsystemsusingthejuicefromthesugarcane,aseriesoftrialswasundertakentoevaluatethefeedingofpigswiththerawjuicefromthesugarpalmtree.Demonstrationsinsome14farmhouseholdsinvillagesthataretraditionalproducersofpalmsugarshowedthatpigsfedwithfreshjuicefromthesugarpalmtree,complementedwithrestrictedamountsofboiledwholesoyabeans(equivalentto150g/dayprotein),grewatanaveragerateof400g/day.Aneconomicanalysisshowedthatpigfeedingwasmuchmoreprofitablethanmakingsugar.Itisalsomuchmoreenvironmentallyfriendly,especiallywhenthepigexcrementisprocessedinlow-costbiodigesterstoproducegasforhouseholdcooking.Juiceproductionrangedfrom2.76to6.37kg/tree/daywithanaveragesugarcontentof15%.Assumingeachtreeoccupiesanareaof50m2thisisequivalenttoarangeof12to28tonnessugarperhectareperyear,whichforrain-fedconditionsindicatesthatthesugarpalmtreeisbothahighlyproductiveandefficientuserofsolarenergy.
