Study on the prevalence of bovine trypanosomosis in Assosa district of the BenishanGulgumuz region, west Ethiopia

Across-sectionalstudywasconductedinAssosadistricttodetermineprevalenceofbovinetrypanosomosisandevaluateitsseverity.Thestudyemployedparasitologicalbloodscreeningof322randomlyselectedcattle.Forparasitologicalidentification,bloodsampleswereexaminedusingBuffycoattechnique.Ingeneral,fromthetotalbloodsamplescollected,theprevalenceoftrypanosomosiswas22.1%fornbsp;T.congolense,14.3%mixedT.vivaxandT.congolense4.67%,T.vivax2.2%andT.brucei0.9%.ThehighestandthelowestprevalencewererecordedinKushmengle,27.8%andAbramo,18.2%,respectively.Thetrypanosomainfectionwasslightlyhigherinmales(22.5%)nbsp;thanfemales(21.5%).Age-wiseprevalencewas11.7%inanimals22years,nbsp;23.2%inanimalsof2years.Fromthetotalsampledcattle,51.1%weresubjectivelyratedashavingpoor,20.2%mediumand0%goodbodyconditionandprevalenceswere51.1%,20.2%and0%forpoor,mediumandgood,respectively.ThefindingofthisworkrevealedthattrypanosomosiswasanimportantprobleminAssosadistrict;causingsignificanteconomiclossduetoitsnegativeimpactontheproductivityofcattle.
