Identification of X-chromatin and determination of its incidence in Nigerian goat breeds

Thenumbersofx-chromatinbody(#8220;drumstick#8221;appendages)onthepolymorphnuclearneutrophils(PMNS)inthreemajorbreedsofNigeriangoatswerestudiedusing81goats(27goatsperbreed).Eachgoatbreedwasderivedfromthreedifferentlocationsinthecountrybasedontheareasofitspreponderance.SmearsfrombuccalcavityandPMNSfromeachgoatweredevelopedusingstandardstainingtechniques.nbsp;Themeanvaluesobtainedperbreedirrespectiveofsexwere1.92%,1.65%and1.60%forSahelGoats(SG),RedSokotoGoats(RSG)andWestAfricanDwarfGoats(WADG),respectively.Themeanvaluesobtainedforthebucksanddoes;irrespectiveofbreedwere0.13%and3.07%,respectively.Thoseformalesperbreedwere0.15%forSG,0.15%forRSG,and0.10%forWADGandfordoesperbreedwere3.44%nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;forSG,nbsp;nbsp;3.10%forRSGnbsp;nbsp;and2.67%forWADG.Theresultsgenerallyrevealedthatthefrequencyof#8216;drumstick#8217;wasstatisticallydifferent(P0.05)betweenBucksandDoes;Buckswerestatisticallythesame(P0.05)in#8216;drumstick#8217;incidence,irrespectiveofbreedandlocation,whilethe#8216;drumstick#8217;incidencewasstatisticallyhigher(P0.05)inSahelianDoes,followedbyRSDoesandleastinWADDoes.ThismayaccountforhigherprolificacyfrequentlyobservedinSG,followedbyRSG.nbsp;However,locationexhibitedaninfinitesimaleffectonthefrequencyof#8216;drumstick#8217;withinbreeds,indicatingthatit#8217;sincidenceispurelyageneticfactor.
