ThestudywascarriedoutatHolettaresearchcenter,Ethiopiaaimingatidentifyingthefeedingvalueofureatreatedwheatstrawforcrossbreddairycowsascomparedtountreatedstraw.Theexperimentalanimals(BoranxFriesiancrossbreddairycow)wereusedinLatinsquaredesigntostudyeffectoffeedingureatreatedwheatstraw,untreatedwheatstrawandhayonfeedintake,milkyield,milkcompositionandeconomicbenefits.Asaresultofthetreatment,crudeprotein(CP)andinvitroorganicmatterdigestibility(IVOMD)hasrisenfrom20to57.8(g/kg)andfrom311to435(g/kg)respectively.Neutraldetergentfiber(NDF)hasreducedfrom808to761(g/kg)butAshpercenthasincreasedfrom74nbsp;to96(g/kg).Rumendegradabilityofallexperimentalfeedshasincreasedacrossincubationhours.At96hrsofincubation,treatmentofstrawwithureahasresultedtoanincreasefrom403nbsp;to500g/kg.Highlysignificant(P0.05)differenceswereobservedbetweenroughageintakes.Cowsfedhaybaseddiet,ureatreatedstrawbaseddietanduntreatedwheatstrawbaseddiethaveconsumed9,5.5and5kgDMfeedrespectively.Thedifferencebetweenconcentrateintakeswasalsohighlysignificant(p0.05).Cowsfedhay-baseddiethaveconsumedthehighestamount(4.29kg)ofconcentrate.nbsp;Cowsfedureatreatedstrawhaveconsumedhigherconcentrate(4.22kg)thanthosefeduntreatedwheatstrawbaseddiets(4.03kg).Highlysignificant(P0.05)differenceswereobservedontotalDMintake.Cowsfedhay-baseddiethaveconsumedthehighest(13kg)totaldrymatter.nbsp;Cowsfedureatreatedwheatstrawbaseddiethasconsumedhighertotaldrymatter(10kg)thanthosefeduntreatedstrawbaseddiet(9.6kg).Withregardtonutrientintake,highlysignificant(P0.05)differenceswereobservedinintakeoftotalcrudeprotein(CP).Cowsfedhay-baseddiethaveconsumedthehighestCP(1508g/c/d).CowsfedureatreatedstrawbaseddiethaveconsumedhigherCP(1248.9g/c/d)thancowsfeduntreatedstrawbaseddiet(1047.8g/c/d).Highlysignificant(P0.05)differenceswereobservedinintakeoftotalmetabolizableenergy(ME).nbsp;Cowsfedhay-baseddiethaveconsumedthehighestME(133MJ/c/d).nbsp;CowsfedureatreatedstrawbaseddiethaveconsumedhigherME(92.9MJ/c/d)thanthosefeduntreatedstraw(82.44MJ/c/d).Effectsofexperimentalfeedsondailymilkyieldwerehighlysignificant(P00.05).Cowsfedhay-baseddiethaveproducedthehighestmilk(10.61t/cow/day).Cowsfedureatreatedwheatstrawbaseddiethasproducedhighermilk(91t/cow/day)thancowsfeduntreatedwheatstrawbaseddiet(81t/cow/day).Effectsofexperimentaldietsonmilkfat,lactoseandtotalsolidshaven'tdifferedsignificantly(P0.05).However,highlysignificant(P0.001)differencesonmilkproteinwereobserved.Cowsfedhaybaseddiet,untreatedwheatstrawbaseddietandureatreatedwheatstrawbaseddiethaveproduced3.34%,3.06%and3.11%protein/cow/dayrespectively.Cowsfedureatreatedwheatstrawbaseddietonaveragehasgothigherliveweight(370kg)thancowsfedhay-baseddiet(361.8kg).Cowsfeduntreatedwheatstrawbaseddiethasrelativelytheleastweight(357kg).Basedonmilkpricepaidbyprivateconsumers,with8.00Birr/1tmilk,thehighestnetreturn(58.9Birr/cow/day)wasfoundfromcowsfedhaybaseddiet.Thiswasfollowedbyureatreatedstrawbaseddietwhichhasbetternetreturnof52.6ETB/cow/daythanuntreatedstrawbaseddietwhichhadanetreturnof(49Birr/cow/day).nbsp;
