Ovarian activity of Bos indicus (zebu) cows in northeastern Nigeria

Theovariesof1270Bosindicuscowswhereusedtoevaluatetheinfluenceofbreedonovarianactivity.Threebreeds(RedBororo,WhiteFulaniandWadara)wereused.Thepresenceorabsenceofpregnancywasnotedafterslaughter,andtheovarieswerecollected.Folliclesweremeasuredandclassifiedassmall(1to4mm),medium(5to8mm)orlarge(#8805;9mm)indiameter.CorpusluteumwasclassifiedasfunctionalCLorcorpusalbicansbasedongrossmorphology.Lutealstructuresandfollicleswerecomparedwithdifferentphasesoftheoestruscycle.Basedonthis,thecowswereclassifiedascycling,pregnant,anoestrus,prepubertalheifersorthosehavingabnormalovarianactivity.nbsp;Differenceinbreeddidnotshoweffectonfollicularpopulationanddevelopment(P0.05).Alsoprevalenceofvariousfunctionalstatesofovariesdidnotrevealsuperiorityofanybreedovertheothers.ItwasconcludedthatthestudydidnotdetectanyeffectofbreedonovarianactivityofBosindicuscows.
