Abstract:Compassion fatigue, also known as secondary traumatic stress(STS), is a state experienced by those helping people or animals in distress; it is an extreme state of tension and preoccupation with the suffering of those being helped to the degree that it can create a secondary traumatic stress for the helper. Sufferers can exhibit several symptoms including hopelessness, a decrease in experiences of pleasure, constant stress and anxiety, and a pervasive negative attitude physically and mentally. This paper reviewed the concept the compassion fatigue, symptoms and evaluation tools. The potential issues causing compassion fatigue among nursing staffs were also analyzed, in order to prevent compassion fatigue and improve the experiences of occupational satisfaction.
