Abstract The toxicities of a series of insecticides on the Argentine Stem Weevil (Hyperodes bonariensis Kuschel) were compared using a topical application technique. The insecticides tested were Bayer S4400. Bayer S767, “Bidrin,” “Bromophos,” carbaryl, DDT, diazinon, dichlorvos, heptachlor, mevinphos, trichlorphon. Of these Bayer S767, DDT, diazinon, dichlorvos, and mevinphos showed the highest toxicities. At the LD50 level, Bayer S767 and dichlorvos were significantly more toxic to the weevil than were the other three, but at the LD95 level there was no significant difference between any of the five. Because of the transient nature of mevinphos and dichlorvos and restrictions on the use of DDT, diazinon and Bayer S767 appear to be the most promising of the insecticides tested, and merit field evaluation as controlling agents for the Argentine Stem Weevil.
