The toxic and antigenic components of Sporidesmium bakeri, Syd. (Syn. Pithomyces chartarum (Berk. & Curt.) M. B. Ellis)

Abstract Crude aqueous spore extracts of the fungus Sporidesmium bakeri, Syd, (Syn. Pithomyces chartarum (Berk. & Curt.) M. B. Ellis) have been studied by electrophoresis and gel diffusion methods. The toxicity of such material for tissue culture cells has been confirmed and a modified assay procedure developed. Unsuccessful attempts have been made to demonstrate in vitro toxin neutralising antibodies in the sera of guinea-pigs dosed with S. bakeri spores, rabbits hyperimmunised with fungal material, and a small number of sheep suffering from facial eczema.
