Abstract：Objective To evaluate the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome in female college students from the faculty of nursing, and to investigate its association with sleep quality. Methods 〓A cross-sectional study was conducted using a stratified, randomized cluster-sampling method. The IBS was diagnosed according to Rome Ⅲ criteria and Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI)was used for self-assessment of sleep quality. Multivariate analysis was used by logistic regression and risk assessment by odds ratio(OR)with 95% confidence interval(CI). Results 〓A total of 468 subjects fulfilled the questionnaires were enrolled. The average age was(19.60±1.20)years. The prevalence of IBS was 17.31%(81/468), and significantly higher in grade two than that in grade three(23.02% vs 9.27%, P0.001). The overall prevalence of insomnia reached 22.22%(104/468). In IBS group, the prevalence of insomnia was significantly higher than that in non IBS group(30.86% v.s. 20.41%, OR=1.74, 95% CI∶1.02~2.90, P=0.040). By logistic regression analysis(forward stepwise), spicy food and insomnia were independent risk factors for IBS. However, high grade was a protective factor. Conclusion 〓 Insomnia is a risk factor for IBS in female college students from the faculty of nursing.
