Anyone experienced in performancemeasurement and improvement has feltthe frustration of maintaining high performancelevels. Complex systems thatwe frequently rely on in hospitals are subjectto breakdown through distractingforces such as changing priorities, staffturnover without adequate training,shortcutting due to excessive workload,etc. These systems that are codified aspolicies, procedures and processes seemsubject to unforgiving degradation.This predictable deterioration can be referredto as “relapsing mediocrity”. Howcan one maintain high levels of performance?
