Bone disease, an under-diagnosed manifestationof Inflammatory Bowel DiseaseIBD, warrants special consideration. Osteoporosis/osteopenia commonly affects30-50% of IBD patients. The quiescentnature of this disease makes it extremelychallenging to diagnose and treat. Patientswith osteoporosis and osteopeniaare asymptomatic unless they suffer a fracture.In the past, bone health has beenoverlooked due to the other pressing issuesand complications that arise in thispopulation. However, screening, preventiveefforts and active treatment areessential. Because bone disease can significantlyreduce health and quality oflife, clinicians should be aware of bonedisease in all patients with IBD.
