Following five East India Company officials (each of whom is supported by a useful genealogical table) in Delhi and its environs from 1803 to 1853, Sylvia Shorto's British Houses in Late Mughal Delhi is a fascinating and thorough examination of their lives, domestic building activities and entanglements with the waning Mughal Empire, which, in 1803, meant little more than the city-state of Delhi. Spanning fifty years, most of the interregnum between the conquest of Delhi by the East India Company in 1803 and the Revolt of 1857-58, after which India came under British rule, is a time of transition between empires. The historian Percival Spear described it as'the Twilight'.1
