Monitoring of Evapo-transpiration in Major Districts of Haryana Using Penman Monteith Method

Evapotranspiration (ETo) is a major component of hydrological cycle. Its estimation is important for water resource management purposes and for understanding soil water balance at a place. ETo is known to be dependent upon climatic factors and hence, climatic change is having an effect on evapotranspiration. In this study, the effect of temperature on evapotranspiration has been studied in Gurgaon, Hissar and Ambala district of Haryana 11 years weather data. The data for various metrological factors, temperature, wind speeds, relative humidity for the period of (1998-2008) was collected from Metrological Department, Gurgaon, Haryana. Using the data, evapotranspiration was estimated using the internationally accepted FAO version of Penman Monteith equation. The data was analyzed monthly and annually. Trend analysis was done temperature affecting evapotranspiration. PET was found to show a decreasing trend for January, February, March, June; remains more or less constant for April, May, December and increasing for July, August, September. Khariff and Rabi seasons were analyzed separately. The ETo during the Khariff season was found to 1.5 times to twice as much as during Rabi season in Hisar, Gurgaon, Rohtak, Bhiwani . The temperature study shows that this increase due to high temperature in Kharif season as compared to Rabi season.
