A Novel Framework for Distributed Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation in EPONWiMAX Networks

摘要

In Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON), allocation of bandwidth to the Optical Network Units (ONU) is a critical issue in determining the performance of the network. The resource allocation process in EPON is carried out by the Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) algorithm. The onus of resource allocation or DBA estimation is bore solely by Optical Line Terminal (OLT) which results in more idle time at the OLT, thereby resulting in wastage of bandwidth and increased delay in data transmission. In this paper, a new framework for EPON is proposed, wherein, the DBA estimation is shared by the OLT and ONU, thereby reducing the idle time in OLT and improving the bandwidth utilization. The proposed framework is evaluated under heavy load conditions with the help of OPNET simulations and it has been demonstrated that the proposed framework outperforms the conventional scheme in terms of throughput, percentage of utilization and other QoS services.
