Humanidades e ciência: uma leitura a partir da Bioética de Van Rensselaer (V. R.) Potter

The rise of Bioethics took place at a timewhen the gap between the sciences andthe humanities seemed insurmountable.The appeal of Bioethics was in itsmission of overcoming this distancewhich was proving to be critical for thefuture development of humanity and formaintaining the conditions for life on theplanet. It was in this context that V. R.Potter put forward his original conceptof Bioethics as an integration betweenBiology and human values – particularlymoral philosophy – to guide humansurvival. In this sense, this paper will seekto develop and clarify the meaning of theconcept of V. R. Potter’s Bioethics and theproblem of “two cultures”, namely theneed for building a dialogue between thehumanities and the sciences, seeking aconvergence of the ethical relationships ofall knowledge around the idea of caringfor life.
